May is Celiac Awareness Month, and oh my gosh how things have changed since I started Pamela's Products in 1988! At that time, it was thought that 1 in 7000 people had Celiac disease. I heard constantly, "What is GLUTTON and why don't I want any?" and "Oh these are gluten-free? That's the stuff that doesn't taste good." In 1988, I could count on one hand the number of companies that made gluten-free foods. Though I am not Celiac or gluten intolerant, I understood that food is one of the most important enjoyments in life, so I wanted to make a difference to those people who needed theirs to be gluten-free. And my answer to all the sour looks and comments about how horrible gluten-free foods tasted was, "Try mine." Back then, stores hardly carried any gluten-free products, and it was a topic that was never written about in magazines or mentioned in TV commercials. The stores that did want my products said, "We don't care that they are gluten-free -- they just taste good." It wasn't until a few celebrities began talking about the gluten-free diet that products came rolling out of companies. Now you can purchase gluten-free products everywhere and everyone knows someone who needs them. Today, no funny faces are made when I mention that I make gluten-free foods, and most of the time, to my delight, their response is "I KNOW YOUR PRODUCTS! They are the best!" It feels good after all these years that my products are still making a difference in people's lives and that I can continue to support people as they get diagnosed and embark on their gluten-free journeys.

Celiac Awareness

May is Celiac Awareness Month, and as a gluten-free food company, we strive to educate and raise awareness about Celiac Disease and gluten sensitivity.

Here are some facts on Celiac Disease from Beyond Celiac:
  • Celiac disease is a serious genetic autoimmune disease that damages the villi of the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food.
  • An estimated 1 in 133 Americans, or about 1% of the population, has celiac disease.
  • It is estimated that 83% of Americans who have celiac disease are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with other conditions.
  • 6-10 years is the average time a person waits to be correctly diagnosed. (Source: Daniel Leffler, MD, MS, The Celiac Center at Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center)
  • Celiac disease can lead to a number of other disorders including infertility, reduced bone density, neurological disorders, some cancers, and other autoimmune diseases.
    Learn more about Related Conditions
  • 5-22% of people with celiac disease have an immediate family member (first degree relative) who also has celiac disease.
  • There are no pharmaceutical treatments or cures for celiac disease.
  • A 100% gluten-free diet is the only existing treatment for celiac disease today.
  • The celiac disease diagnosis rate may reach 50-60% by 2019, thanks to efforts to raise public awareness of celiac disease. (Source: Datamonitor Group, 2009)
