As many of you may be planning to purchase candy to celebrate Valentine's Day this year, we found this online list of candies that are all free of gluten. But as always, we encourage you to read the ingredient statement on package before consuming and call the manufacturer with questions if you have any doubts.

Dining out Allergy-Free
Dining out Allergy-Free
Valentine's Day is often a night to head out on the town with loved ones for a nice dinner. But when you are gluten intolerant and suffer food allergies, it requires a little extra effort to ensure a safe and pleasant meal. We have compiled a few tips to keep in mind when you plan that special night out.
  • Call the restaurant in advance. Let them know about your food allergies and make sure they can properly accommodate you. It is always best to choose a restaurant that understands the gluten-free diet if you can.

  • Be aware of restaurants that offer prix fixe menus on Valentine's Day. They are less likely to accommodate special diets or make substitutions on the spot.

  • Let your server know right up-front about your allergies. Do not hesitate to ask questions and continue to ask until you feel comfortable with the response.

  • Start out with some of the safer options on the menu that are free of sauces or marinades or anything that might have hidden gluten. But never make any assumptions that any entree will be gluten-free. Be sure to have the waiter confirm the absence of any allergens in the recipe.

  • If the waiter is uncertain about an ingredient or how the chef is preparing the food to ensure there is no cross-contamination, send them back to talk directly to the chef. We have all had a server who really does not understand food allergies and decides to respond with an assumption. Press them to talk to the chef and get the facts.

  • Find Me Gluten Free is a website and has an app you can download to find restaurants with gluten-free options in your area. Check them out at their WEBSITE.

A couple months back, the FDA stated that restaurants will also be held to the same gluten-free standards as established in their August 2013 ruling on product manufacturers making gluten-free claims. You can view the information on the FDA website and see question #9. Restaurants will not be required to be compliant until August 2014.
